Our Story
Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, commemorates June 19, 1865, the day when Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced that all enslaved people were free—more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation had been signed by President Abraham Lincoln in 1863.
"For 31 years, our story has been one of celebration—honoring the rich cultural achievements of the African American community in Hobbs, New Mexico, the Land of Enchantment. What began as a tribute to the history and significance of Juneteenth has grown into a cherished tradition that uplifts, educates, and unites our community each year."
